Just To Put Something Lah… Some Remnants… July 7, 2011

… as what the title suggests. I don’t really have time to write out opinions and such.. please take it as I have none!! =p

Picture of our team “Loaded Gunz” during the team building in Taiping. Must remind you that we won 3rd place.. :P

During lunch hour (out of own pocket), I walked around Dataran Ipoh instead because I brought food from home to eat. I thought there would be nice things to see / photograph. Regretted. As anti-social as I am, I should have just joined in their eating time. But then later I found out some people didn’t even get to eat because when 150++ of us landed, a lot of their nearby restaurants (Old Town Kopitiam was one of them) just had a meltdown and couldn’t serve the people within an hour. So they skipped lunch in order to play the next challenge. So maybe I was lucky too?

Our bbq dinner. I ate so much! TBH, I eat a lot… and a lot of people here… don’t. Even my current team mates eat sooooo little that I’m hungry by 4pm. I don’t know how they can do it… they are all strapping young men.

A day before I started work in UVW Bank, I drove all the way back to my old office to have “farewell” lunch with Raymond, my ex-lunch buddy. I paid for meal at Old Town Kopitiam.. hahaha.

Spent one of the fewww Groupons that I have left with Dull. We had late lunch at Vintage Wine Bar.

We were pleased to “discover” this new place called IOI Boulevard. If you don’t mind jams TOO much, this is a nice place to chillout. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby.

Ice lemon tea by the jug.

Some chicken(??) soup.

Egg salad with bacon bits. (But cannot taste the bacon bits also)

My seafood aglio olio.

Dull’s carbonara.

Honestly, the food is nothing to shout about. It fills your tummy and that’s it. But then again, it was only RM9.90 per person, so can’t complain too much, especially when I got rebate (for early bird purchase) from Groupon some more, lol. Plus, this place is more of a drinking hole / chill out place, so you’re not really going there for food. Dull enjoyed the house music they are playing, and if you are old enough (like us?!), you’d recognise dance tunes from Moloko here too… :P

Giant lighter that the waiter loaned to Dull…

For muchhhhh better food, you can go to this next place (but no Groupon, sorry! :P ). Came here just last night with Sookie, at her recommendation – Kissaten @ Jaya One. Actually, there are a lot of food choices here, you really don’t know which way to turn, haha. I foresee coming here a lot more in the future. The place is also pretty packed for a random Wednesday night.

My gyoza — part of a set meal.

Shoyu ramen… it’s not bad, but pretty salty. I would probably not order this again.

Sookie’s pork burger (I think)

Char Siew Pizza that was so omg gooooooooooood that I wanna bring Tron here so that he can experience the wonder. Hahha. Thanks for introducing this piece of delicacy to me Sookie!!

Was great catching up with her! So much to talk about that I ended up sleeping late that night. Yes, Ms I-Used-To-Stay-Up-Til-4am-To-Play-Mafia-Wars is now clocking in at 11pm latest. :P

Btw, I am also ashamed to admit that I do not know the way to PJ State, so I wound up WALKING there yesterday. My feet was bleeding (literally!) when I got back to the office, and my manager told me that my hair looked like it “exploded”. -___- AND… I was sweating like a pigggggggg AND I was very exhausted, like after a gym class. The sky looked really gloomy when I was on the way back from PJ State and kept praying that it won’t rain. When I arrived back at the office (another 250-300m more to walk), I was dismayed to find that it WAS raining, but thankfully it was a very light drizzle that I could walk in. Well… I ran lah. I told myself that the char siew pizza had been sweated off earlier.

Farewell to Leech June 30, 2011

Will be schedulling a lot of blog posts because I don’t foresee myself blogging a lot in the next few days. These are some long-ago pictures from various farewells that my colleagues had thrown for me when I was leaving XYZ Bank. I will definitely miss all of them… but I have to look forward in my new job as well. Praying for favor, wisdom and protection. Not only to be blessed by the new workplace, but to be a blessing to the new workplace as well!

LaVista, Hotel Equatorial Bangi

Sponsored by my boss Em… the whole team + Mr Lee was supposed to come for this farewell, but Raymond had Emergency Leave that day, so he was excused. Which was good news for a new guy who showed up at work the same day of my farewell party, hahaha. On his first day of work already got buffet to eat, what a nice introduction to the company… =)

Mr Lee was this manager who I had to work under for computerisation of two of our subsidiaries, the trustees and the factoring side. As for why the teams are so big, it’s because over the years we had split from doing wholesale treasury and offshore subsidiaries and the overseas subsidiary support (retail banking). For myself, am blessed that I got to “play” with every single system since I started off in wholesale treasury, was loaned over to do computerisation for trustess & factoring, did telebanking also… then did a treasury & accounting system for offshore subsidiary (also involved in them starting e-banking) before finally ended up in retail banking for overseas subsidiaries (specialising in loans, but kinda have to know the whole system from GL to CA/SA, FD, etc).

/>Actually, for group outings, my boss really likes Cafe Lavista, though I think it’s quite pricey. Well, they like it cos it’s halal and there’s a lot of variety. Whether you like western or asian food, you will be able to find something here…

All my plates of food… *grin* Some of them went 6 rounds ok, I think I’m not too bad. :P

Belanja Makan by Other Colleagues @ Serdang

Actually a joint-farewell for me and Francis, who everyone joked that we are going to end up in the same company. I don’t think so because he said that he will be more on business / management side while I’m staying on the technical end. I think most of the peeps are joining for farewell to Francis, hehehe. Thanks for belanja-ing me too!

Jessie, Andric and Helen.

See (organiser), Chu and JLS.

Helen, SF and Francis.

Mr G, Tun & LiTeng.

This is “zhu pak chou”.

The star dish in this restaurant is the ginger fish. We had two giant plates of this = 4 fish!

Some normal veggies… ehhee.

Another star dish – the deep fried seafood tofu.

Sauce-covered fried chicken wings.

Egg foo yong.

A medley of long beans, brinjal, four angled beans.

The Old Gang

Call them the “old” gang not because  of their age, but because these are the ones who I’m closest to and who I’ve known the longest. Pauline, Raymond and Justin treated me to a nice Japanese meal at Miyagi in Bangi. To be honest, during the times that I was going for all this farewell, I was having havoc at work, so I was not really able to enjoy myself peacefully. Ya, I know, even when I’m leaving the workload is a lot… =p

I forgot to bring my camera (!! must be the work !!), so I had to use my handphone camera, as which you can see, is definitely not as high quality…

Justin and Raymond — didn’t get to take a photo with Pauline and myself.

Pauline’s Sushi Set.

Justin’s Unagi teppanyaki set…

My seafood teppanyaki set, which is what I always order when I come here. Their garlic fried rice is darn nice, but somehow not as nice as I remember it to be last time. Maybe food didn’t taste as appetising because of all my work problems, lol. Anyway, Raymond also had a beef teppanyaki set, so lazy to resize and upload his food pic as well. :P

This is not really related to “farewells”, but I was working late (at one point it was the norm for me to leave at 12am, 1am, etc. Sifoo Wong saw me working late so he bought this for me… Arabian food. I didn’t really have mood to eat, but it was a touching gesture. He went out to eat and by me food, then came back to office just to pass me food before he ciao. As he left, he said, “You don’t need me here right?” Hahaha. Actually, I wanted to say “Please stay!” but I don’t want to burden others.

When I left the office at 1am, the guards had locked the gate and my car was parked outside. I distinctly saw a guard saw me standing outside, so I waited patiently for him to open the gate (it is autogate, cannot manually open, unless I become superman). After a while, he still didn’t open, so I went to the security guard window and waved at them. There were 4-5 guards inside the room and they PERSISTENTLY avoided looking at me until I shouted. I think they thought I was a ghost or a figment of their imagination, so they purposely dowan to acknowledge me! Hahahhaa! When I told this story to my friends, they laughed their ass off. And probably vowed not to work late. :P

I will continue the farewell posts in another post that I will schedule to update tomorrow. :)

What I’ve Been Up To? …. Cooking!! June 25, 2011

A lot of people have started Facebook albums showcasing all the good meals that they have been conjuring up in their kitchen. I wish to join in… I mean, how hard can cooking be? I will approach it with scientific precision and “If you follow the instructions, there’s no way you can go wrong.” After all, the first time I *ever* baked, both items came out awesome (my days of mini apricot cheesecakes and chocolate beer cupcakes). Things have been going downhill ever since, and to be honest, my ego is … nowhere to be found. Compared to my days of downloading recipes like a fiend, I’m now in a “why bother?” mode.

Since I’m free-er nowadays, I decided to go back to the kitchen. WTF. My so-called “scientific precision” was obviously not scientific enough when I made lemon cakes on Monday — I wound up burning the entire batch. -____- I spent the rest of the afternoon cutting the burnt bits out and salvaging what I could of the cake. The parts which WEREN’T burnt were very nice, so I fed them to my brother. This is what God intended when he made younger brothers — to eat the older sister’s failed cooking.

My ego was again… diminished even more than before. Where did I go wrong? Well, many reasons actually, you can pick any one :

a. tried to cook two things at once, so attention was split

b. using an oven that shows degrees celcius, but recipe gave temperature in Fahrenheit, so I guess I might have heated the oven a wee bit more than the recipe could take…

c.  when the time was up and the oven dinged, I thought, “aiyah, I’m frying something now, the thing can keep warm in the oven”. WTF kinda thinking is that? Obviously I must’ve temporarily lost my mind. Think I haven’t been cooking for a while, so I forgot how ovens actually work?

Another failed item was me trying to make yam cake. Actually, I don’t think I really failed as much as the lemon cake here… I followed the recipe to a T, and when the house was smelling like fried yam, shallots and heh bee (dried shrimp), I was in heaven. This was what yam cakes were supposed to smell like! I was already salivating thinking about sinking my teeth into an entire pan of yam cake…

Then I started steaming the damn thing with all the rice flour, water, spices, etc… and the recipe said it would be done in 45 minutes. I ended up steaming the thing for 2 hours! And it still looked gooey and wet on top! *sob* I don’t know why! I followed the recipe to a T!! SCIENTIFIC PRECISION I TELL YOU! What went wrong? I’m thinking it’s either the steamer — cos my mom has a titchy steamer that tends to “collect” water on top and the water drops back down on the dish itself FML. Or — the size of the plate was the wrong dimension for cooking. Don’t laugh — it’s totally possible. Like one time, I used a deep dish to bake a cake, and when it was supposed to be done, it wasn’t, because the dough was still wet. However, when I used a wider and shallower cake dish, it baked perfectly fine. So ya, pan size is important, doh.

This is how my yam cake looked like in the end :

You can see the top part is a bit gooey still… by evening it was hardened already… and actually, it is very edible. It tastes really good and flavorful, and it’s oh-so-nice to bite into the chunks of yam. But the presentation really fail. This picture is only saved by the spring onions which I used to hide how hideous it really is. I don’t dare to take a picture of the entire dish as it came out from the steamer. I think I’ll cry.

Ok la, I have a 50% success rate because the 2 other dishes that I made came out very nicely. One was “Vietnamese Shaking Beef”, which is actually a no-brainer. As long as you marinate everything nicely, you fry it out and it is one flavorful meat dish. I didn’t eat it with rice, but I wrapped the beef into lettuce leaves and ate it like Korean BBQ! Hehehe. It was very nice, and it meant that I could eat the whole dish without sharing with others. It is darn darn tasty and aromatic also. You can try out the recipe from Rasa Malaysia yourself. (Just search for Vietnamese Shaking Beef) .

Once again, my presentation skills suck, but I assure you that this is realllllllllly good. Really! :D

And below, I just made it on Thursday because Tron asked me to make an orange poppy seed cake for him. I don’t know where he gets these ideas from, so I just made an orange cake, because I told him I dunno where to buy poppy seeds. Maybe they have it in specialty bake shops, but I don’t know any! =p But I couldn’t find a recipe online for orange cake, so I made FLOURLESS orange cake. Which is quite ok also, because we tried FLOURLESS orange cake in Delicious, and we were so amazed by it, hahaha. Anyway, I can make my own now!! The recipe is deceptively simple, but actually involves a lot of pre-preparation and a lot of work for me because I don’t own a food processor…

The cake looks like a fail here :

But this is how it looks like inside :

Looks quite normal, right? I’m really happy with this cake because it is a strange cake … never made something like this before, and my mom unintentionally gave it her seal of approval by eating half a tupperware of this cake. The tupperware was actually for Tron, but she ate half of it FOR LUNCH (wtf!) and said she did it because it’s a very moist cake, and if she doesn’t eat it, it will go bad very fast. Aiyah, that’s good for me because when they didn’t eat my lemon cake (the one I burnt and had to chop 50% off of), I had to eat everything by myself. And then I wonder why I’m fat. Tsk!

From 3 Outings to 2… June 22, 2011

My boyfriend says that I’m so “popular” because I had three “gatherings” lined up on Saturday. Told him that I couldn’t see him until evening for the 3rd “gathering” which was in fact my mom’s birthday dinner. In the end, the second gathering was cancelled, psh! But I did think that my Saturday was planned out quite “packed”… am quite glad that one got cancelled, though don’t get me wrong — I really did want to meet my friends too.

Saturday started off rather disastrously for me because I was supposed to pick my friend up at 9:45am, but I woke up at 10:05am. -___- I am so fail, and the funny thing is that my friend didn’t call me up. By the time I picked her up and met up with my other 2 friends, the other 2 had finished eating the breakfast. Sigh… fail Leech is fail. However, it was great meeting up with them, and I am glad that I made it in the end. Who are they? They are my primary school mates! The one I picked up is called WSL, the one who organised it is June and the one other one is WJ. WSL used to be the “nerd” back in high school (then again I was also a nerd, so who am I to label others? Maybe this is why we were friends?), and today she is a successful doctor practising in UK. To be honest, I was really surprised to hear that she was back in Malaysia. At first, I thought it was because of Talent Corp’s success in luring back our foreign graduates. But in fact, she came back to pay back JPA for her scholarship. -___- She said it is better for Malaysia if she returns at a later date anyway as she finds that she is gaining way more relevant experience overseas. It’s quite sad when I hear about stories like this — I think I’ll save my “analysis” for another day.

WJ is also a doctor, working in a local government hospital, while June is a lawyer! I think it’s interesting to see how we have all grown up from our primary school days. :) Oh, June also was from FGT (where  I used to attend), so it’s really a small world. This is a picture of how June & I looked in our younger days :

I don’t have any old pics of me and WSL or WJ, but this is how we all look now :

Myself and WSL

Myself, June and WSL

LWJ & June standing, myself and WSL sitting.

Really a nice meet-up, get to hear all kinds of funny stories about how our lives have been. Some of this girls, I haven’t seen for more than a decade! Luckily my 2nd gathering got postponed, because otherwise I could stay with them til 12pm only. Instead, we chit-chatted til 1:30pm, after which I went to Empire Shopping Gallery to buy my mom’s birthday present.

Oh, in case you’re wondering, I was going to meet my colleagues Justin & Pauline who wanted to treat me to ANOTHER farewell lunch in KL. Japanese food + macarons! You know what, I’ve never eaten a macaron in Malaysia before. I ate macarons in Laduree when I was in France, and after that I felt that nothing could ever compare. So why eat sub-standard products. HAHAHA! Please excuse me, that was me just being an utter snobby bitch. To tell the truth, I don’t remember how they taste, but I remember that exquisite, mind-blowing AWESOME feeling I got when I first bit into a macaron. I’m hoping that there is a macaron in Malaysia that can duplicate that feeling. I don’t know .. I really didn’t bother to check it out. Any recommendations? :P Pauline and I even talked about making our own before! But it’s a whole lotta hassle…

Anyway, the Pauline + Justin outing got cancelled — Justin called me while I was searching for new shoes (and my mom’s birthday present). In the end, I got her the whole Olay Regenerist range… hahaha! Anti-aging products! I think it’s so apt, don’t you? I also randomly bumped into Dullnut in Charles & Keith (sales generate some kinda magnetic force field that attract us), and Dull said my present for my mom is insulting. Hmph! You don’t know my mom, Dull!

Called Tron to pick me up earlier since I got ditched by my friends, and he gallantly came by and took me out for … McDonalds! That and a few rounds of Street Fighter. Erm… when you play Street Fighter, do you memorise how to execute each move, or do you just mash the buttons? I’ve been mashing the buttons all the while. *ashamed* Tron kept asking me “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?” and there was one point when I was using Cammy and he was using Gen… and he kept doing the “snake hand” and I couldn’t even penetrate that move at all. *ashamed* After cruelly defeating me multiple times, he taught me how to do the hadouken… after which I can SOMEWHAT do it, but he can do it ALL THE TIME and effortlessly, but for me, it’s kind of a hit-or-miss thing. Hmm… I must learn more so I can defeat Tron… beh tahan his cruel taunts after defeating me.

My knight in not-so-shining car rescues me from an afternoon of being bored stiff after getting ditched by my friend… :p

Afterwards, we went to Extra Super Tanker Restaurant in Damansara Kim to celebrate my mom’s birthday. My sister ordered and paid for the food, and as expected… it was all super yummy! =) This restaurant is now my mom’s favorite restaurant, and my dad is thinking of throwing 63rd birthday here as well. I’m wondering if I should take photos of food then cos they plan to order back the same thing! =p This is what we had :

Roast duck… half of which is eaten just like this …

And the other half is made into “Roast duck sandwich”! This is the “signature” dish of Extra Super Tanker. When Tron first ate this, he said, “What is this? Why so nice wan?” Hahahaha!

Another signature dish – the thousand layer tofu, which is tofu sandwiched with some pork and sandwiched with more tofu… and pork. Etc etc. Not really thousand layers, of course.

Boiled prawns… absolutely yummy when dipped into soy sauce with chillis.

Most expensive dish of the night (RM115) is this crab meat + mihun + egg + pine nuts concoction which is wrapped within some lettuce leaves and eaten. Healthy and yummy.

Some normal veggies…

Our favorite dish of the night – venison fried with celery and sweet peas.

Assam fish.

Longevity noodle.

The people who attended :

My sister & my brother-in-law.

My maternal grandparents, sharing a joke with LY.

Uncle CF and Aunty Kim. She’s very prepared for my “paparazzi” camera, ever since I had uploaded soooo much of our family gathering pics onto Facebook! I think she looks nice in my “impromptu” shots, but she begs to differ.

See, she posing so nicely here with her son, VH.

My mom cutting the birthday cake…

Which looks like this! Strawberry cheese cake! Yumms!

And of course, my date for the night – Tron.

Next morning — Father’s Day celebration, but Tron celebrated by taking me for dim sum  at Oriental Pavilion in Jaya 33. <3 The place is actually super packed, and I thought the “traffic” would ease up after 1pm, but it was as packed when we were leaving as when we first arrived. The dim sum is good, but I think it’s comparable to a lot of other places, e.g: Maju Palace and Ming Court (both also under the same branch as Oriental Pavilion actually, lol). I think the other two places are not as crowded kua. Then again it was Father’s Day weekend, so who knows.

The bad thing about dining for 2 is that you don’t get as much variety as when you eat with your whole entire family, but I think we tried a lot of stuff as it is already :

Salad prawns… my favorite! Evidently, Tron’s one too since he got this without me asking.

Some pastry with BBQ filling inside… I don’t know what it’s called, but Oriental Pavilion’s pastry is really light, buttery and yummy! The pastry for the egg tart was just as nice. Love it!

The waiter just plonked these 3 types of dim sum in front of us, and said, “Which one you dowan?” So we just said “ok” and it made it easier for us to decide what to eat. Otherwise it would be the same ha gou / siu mai / yu mai lah… at least got something different now. =p

Tron ordered some char siu… but I think can do without it next time. Not so good.

My must have — pei dan (century egg) porridge! Ok la…

Tron’s must have – char siu pau.

Bill came up to RM81++ … thanks Tron! <3 <3 <3  After that, we wandered around Jaya 33 for a bit, and then ended up at a Mary Kay roadshow. To be honest, I’ve never been really that interested in their make-up (cos I don’t know about it. I’m only interested in what I can see, e.g: what I can purchase at the local drugstore, hehehe), but they have some mineral foundation that I am quite interested in! It’s better quality than the Maybelline / L’oreal one that I bought last time, I think comparable to Everyday Minerals. Sigh… should I buy it? But it’s quite expensive lor, going for RM70 per package… I wrote more about the event on my beauty blog, but basically, this is how I look like after the makeover :

And I won their TimeWise Firming Eye Cream (going at RM150) :

That night, I went out to Chili’s — not to celebrate Father’s Day, but to celebrate my brother’s birthday in advance. Reason being that my sister will be going to London and she won’t be back until after my brother turns 21, so best to celebrate earlier. Thought of going to TGIF as I know they’ll be quieter… but my brother said he will “sacrifice” and go for Chili’s as my mom prefers the latter. Sigh! The only Chili’s near my house is the one in Empire, and I know it’s darn darn difficult to get a seat there because they always have so much people. I insisted to them that I’m not making reservations (I know, I’m so bitchy… and lazy), so we should go earlier. Though we arrived by 6:30pm, the waiting time was 20 minutes. After we had waited 20 minutes, we heard the person in charge say the waiting time was now 50 minutes. Crazy! Why do people still put their name down? If it were me, I would just go to Italiannies next door.

Well, I was already angry even before I got seated, because what happened was the person in charge saw me, saw it was only a party of 5 and then said they would check if there were tables or not, I MIGHT be able to be instantly seated! But after ding donging here and there, there were none, and then someone from behind me just put their name on the list and cut me. Wtf! If no table then straightaway put my name on the list la, right? Why go and let someone else cut me? Thankfully, what mine is mine and can’t be taken away, as later the couple that cut me (unintentionally) didn’t come back after 20 minutes, so I was able to get seated after that.

Other rants that I later wrote about in their “customer service survey” that night :
[...] Secondly, there was a table available, but because of such a long line of customers waiting to be seated, they left the table empty for so long before allowing guests to actually come in to be seated.

Thirdly, the waiters frequently pretend not to hear (don’t know pretense or they really didn’t hear) when we wanted refills for our drinks. If you all feel so hard up to give us refills, then just take bottomless drinks off the menu. Even when we manage to catch someone’s attention, they either quickly walk away, or say, “please wait” and then never come back!

Fourthly, when I made payment already, they took my credit card and never came back with it. Someone else cleared our whole table and we were just waiting to sign the bill and go! But we can’t, cos they just took our credit card and never came back to us! Our original waiter (who served us) saw us and instead of checking what happened to the bill, asked us if we had already ordered. We had to actually go to and find the supervisor / floor manager to find out what’s going on, and THEN they tell me they’ve lost my credit card! This is unacceptable! He just acted as if I had never given my card in the first place and waved his hands around the computer / cash register as if to say, “See? It isn’t here”. I was totally “stunned” for a moment.

When he saw I was about to give him a piece of my mind, he said I should give him 1 minute to find the card. During the time period, I was actually prepared to call up my bank to cancel my card. After more than 60 seconds, he miraculously managed to find my card (apparently they placed my card into the “paid” stack … whatever). Should I even be charged 10% for service like this? I understand that it is Father’s Day, but it should be the restaurant’s perogative to make sure they are adequately staffed, NOT MINE!

Oh, and when we were waiting for our table, I noticed other people who were having a lot of arguments regarding bookings being made and their name not appearing on the waiting list. Chilis, please take note of when there are “festive celebrations”…

Yes, at the end of the night, they even “lost” my credit card… damn char dou, really BAN BAN BAN this place and not going to eat at Chili’s — or at least, the one in Empire Shopping Gallery. I repeat what I asked in the survey — should I even need to pay 10% service charge for “service” like this?

At least the food is alright in my books, so when we were eating, we were joyful. Too bad the before and after is not worth it at all!

My dad and mom.

Lol, my dad looks so leceherous in this picture.

The siblings.. aiyah, the one that smile the biggest has the nicest teeth la… lol lol lol

My sister’s quesadilla explosion salad… the portion is GINORMOUS. When she saw it, she was so happy, and kept going, “This is so worth the money!” (I’m paying anyway, lol)

The Triple Play starter that arrived at the same time as our food. -___- But it is our perennial favorite.

My brother’s dunno what lime fish or something …

My parents shared the Big Mouth Bites… I love the onion rings that come with this dish!

My South Western quesadilla combo (honestly cannot tell if I’m eating chicken or beef also. Fail.)

That’s all for the weekend update…. a lot of food, I know! I’ve been trying to gym it all off, and to be honest, it’s very difficult, haha. I’m very tired and sleepy at the moment, but I am trying to will myself to go for a Body Jam class which starts in approximately 58 minutes time. Still thinking whether I want to go or not because the new release for Body Jam is 50-50 in my books. I’m afraid that if I go for it, I will end up too tired to go for Body Attack tomorrow… sigh!
