The Lang Tengah Update July 17, 2010

((This took a long time to post… I was back on the 11th of July, just fyi. ;p))

Back from Lang Tengah! The holiday was good because of the company … but that’s basically it. :( I’m disappointed in whoever who said that this place is worth going to. If you ask me… go to Redang instead. Redang is 45 minutes from Merang Jetty, Lang Tengah is about 90 minutes away! And for what? An island that is pretty much like Redang. Okie, you might say that Redang is more commercialised, or there are more people there… to me, it’s about the same lah. So go to Redang… IMHO (if memory serves me correctly, as the last time I went to Redang was a good 6 years ago), Redang beach is even cleaner!

The holiday is a pretty activity-filled one… an all-in-one, so to speak. If you want to go for those spa/luxurious holidays, I suggest going to Langkawi as you’ll have more choices for accommodation & food. Based on the map in our “resort”, there are only 4 main places for travelers to stay at.

The snorkeling package that we took (3D/2N) consists of 2 snorkeling trips and one diving trip. Actually, on paper it looks very jam packed, but there’s a lot of free time for you for “free and easy” moments. Maybe I’m one pampered ho, but most of the time, I needed to recover from the nasty boatride + early plane ride + sleep debt from work week + sea water, hahaha. Ok la, it’s not that bad. There was a lot of fun too, but I’m currently nursing this nagging headache, so I have a right to be grumpy. ;p

You donno how hard I had to pray all the way to the resort, because there are so many transfers, and any crap that could happen would really affect the entire trip. Like, just 2 days before the holiday, I found out that the confirmation for the hotel booking said 9-11 June although the file was named 9-11 July and all ding-donging between me and the staff was mentioning 9-11 July. Super stressed and worried that would end up with no booking. Then there was this “clause” in the hotel booking that said all payment had to be made at least 2 weeks in advance, wtf. I thought only had to pay booking fee. Was so worried til the staff replied me and soothed away my fears. ;p

Then there is the little fact that we need to do a taxi booking for a ride to the airport BEFORE 6am. After the horrible incident whereby one cab stood me up when I was supposed to take the fateful Tiger Airways ride to Singapore, I asked L to do the booking. Now L is a very “manager” kinda guy, from his actual job to his personality. -__-” Like, when we were supposed to make bookings for a trip to HK, I asked him to book the tickets, and he delegated the job to me because “I never made an airplane booking before!”
Me : “What!? Don’t you go on business trips very often?” (This is not him lying, he really does go on a lot of biz trips.)
L : “Biz trip booked by my secretary what.”
Me : “Go learn how to book… you can book this round wan.”
L : “I sked I make a mistake. :(
Me : *books tickets eventually*

Anyway, because of this manager that I’m seeing, he did do the good thing and book the taxi in the end, but I was the one that sourced for the cab number and eventually also suggested the cab company plus told him the rates (called to get the rates). So basically all he had to do was BOOK. But good job, honey! :D

Of course, I booked the cab for Sg with Dull and the cab never showed up. So up til the moment I got into the cab, I was worried. -__- I think I wanna boycott reach-airport-by-6am flights la! Stupid budget airlines!! But the good thing is that our cab driver is SOOOO nice and his cab is SOOOO clean! I’m totally going to call him the next time I need to get to the airport. Also, because we were flying Fireflyz, the cab fare was like RM40 only, even with the 50% surcharge.

Oh yeah, how could I forget. We were flying Fireflyz, and after hearing horror stories from Sweatlee and Audrey, I was so darn scared that the plane also would be delayed. It’s like, every step of the way also I was worried. You know how stressed that is?? Hahaha. No other trip have I felt so stressed. FYI, I didn’t want to take Fireflyz, but L had a good experience on the plane before and he kept lobbying for it as we are both Subang-ites, and it really is more convenient la. If you factor in cab fares into your plane tickets, the prices are comparable. Especially since Air Asia has a lot of hidden costs but Fireflyz doesn’t. Fireflyz also has food! Hahaha… (not like that is a deciding factor.)

Ah, the plane left on time in the end, and arrived early to KT airport. Same on the return flight, so actually it was a pretty good experience with Fireflyz! However, I don’t think I wanna take it again because the propeller plane is darn noisy. Super noisy can die. Cannot even sleep at all, thank God only a 60 minute flight.

Transfer from KT to Merang jetty also was worried because there was no reply from the land transfer guy, En. Yassin. -___- But he was there to meet us, alright. And then transfer from the jetty to the island itself was also stressful because at first they said that there would be 2 loads of passengers, and they allowed the peeps who came from bus from KL to go on the 1st boat. The 2nd boat will be dunno how much later. Imagine waiting around like monkey by the side of the river! -___- L and I just accepted our fate and stood around eating rice crisps… but suddenly the En Yassin guy said that the two of us could go first because there was still some space on the boat! So we were the random last 2 to get on the boat… as L says, we were blessed. ;)

We ended up getting to know the couple behind me in this picture too.. haha. The guy is quite ‘experienced’ in going to the islands, so he could talk to us about the probability of bumping into baby sharks while snorkeling. ;)

I look like I got a huge lump on my forehead here, right? I also donno why. Misshapen head.

Sans make-up.. hmm.. must ‘pou’ better! :(

Upon arrival to the resort (Redang Lang.. seriously, if you want a no-frills kinda holiday vacay, do consider this place. They are super well organised, friendly, trustable and probably the cheapest place around. Of coz, don’t expect a 5-star hotel room. It’s more like 2-stars), we had a briefing on how the schedule / routine of the place is like. We unpacked in our twin, which turns out, able to hold at least 4 people (2 queen-size beds)! The place was clean, but sparse. Really no frills. No TV, but that’s ok with me because I didn’t come to Lang Tengah to watch TV (something that I don’t even do at home). Luckily, I did bring along my iPod speakers, so there was some form of entertainment. I <3 my iPod speakers! :D

After unpacking and relaxing, we had our lunch (provided by the resort… really they plan everything for you! Just bring yourself… and your money. ;p), which tasted awesome because we were so darn hungry from all the traveling. By the way, I don’t have much pictures from the trip because most of the time I didn’t take the camera out of the room as I didn’t want to drop it into the ocean. =_=

More resting (read : sleeping because we woke up at 4am!), and then we had to go for our first snorkeling trip! It was a “round island snorkeling trip”, whereby they took us round Lang Tengah (pretty small island, really) and dropped us off at 2 spots for snorkeling. All in all, takes about 2 hours. And we were late to the boat to go snorkeling… so at first I thought that that was that… was a bit grumpy because we arrived at the meeting area ON THE DOT, and we could see the boat departing. However, Redang Lang staff were so awesome, they let us (3 of us all together) take this smaller boat to follow the bigger boats. And because we were smaller and lighter, we easily caught up with the boat, and we felt like VIP holiday-ers as we had our own private transportation. Hahahhaa! Awesome! That was the one and only boat ride I enjoyed during the entire trip.

Honestly, I’ve forgotten how nice / not nice snorkeling is. :) It’s really awesome to be swimming with the fishes, looking at the beautiful corals and just being really “one with nature”. The bad part is when it gets super repetitive and you swallow too much sea water and salt water drips into your eyes. =__= And then feeling sea sick smelling the diesel from the boat. And all that bumping around. And the hot sun. Wah, I make it sound like a torture trip, but seriously there is the good and the bad. Just that to ME there is more bad than good. So I won’t do it again. L says “snorkeling is for babies!” and says that he wants to get his PADI license. ER!! I don’t know if that’s the solution to all the “bad bits” I said about snorkeling…

My advice to you if you do want to try it anyways is to go during off peak season (I did! But donno why got so many people), put loads of sun block (the SPF135++ I got really works! So happy!) and just take a deep breath and take a plunge. Don’t be a f*cking sissy about stuff. I was SO annoyed at the people that :
a. squeal damn f*cking loud at EVERYTHING
b. take a f*cking darn long time to even jump off the boat
c. have this really loud voice screaming about EVERY SINGLE THING, super duper long and drawn-out PLAY BY PLAY of EVERY SINGLE f*cking THING with a voice like f*cking hyena kena rape really causing my eardrums to bleed

At times like this, I like my so-called low and monotonous voice… it has not been known to cause someone eardrums to bleed with the repetitive shrieks…

Anyway, as you can tell, I was annoyed by some people on the boat. Geez! Another thing I cannot tahan is these parents that bring their toddlers, like 3 years old like that on holiday. The kid really doesn’t know how to appreciate it yet, and it’s a bother to you AND the kid! And the kid is screaming and crying ALL the time! And they donno how to comfort her. WTF! Can you have some consideration for other people on holiday? I’m on holiday to get away from stress, but this is like adding on to my blood pressure, yo! I felt like saying to the parents, “If you can’t get her to shut up I’m gonna throw your kid into the sea.” Seriously, I’m not going to take my children (when I have lar) on holiday outstation (if travelling on public transportation) until they are 6-7 years old.

Digressing again, but there was once L and I were walking around Subang Parade, and then we saw this kid who was screaming his lungs out, and then he choked on his tongue wtf. Damn padan muka. Raymond said that if his kid did that “at an age when he should know better”, he will drag the kid home. If while dragging the kid home, the kid doesn’t shut up, then the kid will be dead. If the kid shuts up, then he will only end up half-dead. -___- So we call Raymond “the killer daddy”. ;p

Back from snorkeling, we are hungry and it’s just in time for tea. :) Tea time is a real pleasure… lots of toast and kaya and butter and kueh and jelly! And piping hot Milo with condensed milk. Er… then free and easy again. We were too bushed to even scout the beach, so we bathed and slept instead. Seriously, I really cannot believe that I traveled so far to catch up on sleep instead, and I’m still sleepy right now! Woke up in time for the bbq dinner, where there’s bbq ikan pari (stingray), beef, chicken and all kinds of other yummies. To me it was a great meal, but this L kept expecting something like lobster and sotong or something. Er… I think its easier to find good seafood in Subang than in Lang Tengah. (Honestly!)

At night, we walked along the beach but we couldn’t explore much as past Lang Sari resort (which is where we are going to pretend we stayed at … easy to convince friends as we have more pics here than at Redang Lang, lol!), there is this huge stone wall kinda thing that separates this part of the beach from the D’Coconut Lagoon resort. Plus, since it was at night, it was scary to think that if we scaled the rocks, on the other side is the ocean. -___- Seriously, I’m quite scared of the ocean… or to put it in a nicer sounding manner… I respect the sea. You never know what creatures are lurking underneath and I don’t want to go frolicking about in a place where I’m literally out of my element.

Went back to the hotel to play pool, it’s like RM10 for one hour. So depending on how good you are, you can get as many games in. As we aren’t, we only got 3 games in, lol. In our defense, L spent a lot of the time trying trick shots, of which I learned one. Hahaha. :P

Next day, darn lazy to wake up, and ended up missing breakfast as well as the jungle trekking. -___- Luckily we had our own supplies in the room. -__- (greedy people are greedy). The worse possible thing happened in this scenario… lunch was 40 minutes late that day, donno why la. Darn pissed off at this point, and L said, “let’s ditch this place during dinner! We eat the bbq already!”. But when lunch was served, it was so yummy that all was forgiven again. =p

Short digestion period, and then it was time to go to the Redang Marine Park for 2nd round of snorkeling. Oh yea, you can snorkel any other time you wish on the beach front just in front of Redang Lang resort, but we were so lazy, we didn’t snorkel other than when brought to these “special” places. Haha. Anyway, Redang Marine Park is really nice and worth the cheap RM5 entry fee. :) More varieties of fishies and corals to look at. Oh yeah, I also recommend you get the bread to feed the fish as well, as it is very fun to feed the fishes while snorkeling, getting up close and personal as well. :) It was only 1 hour in the park, but getting there takes 45 minutes, omg. Really dying.com.

Came back to the island with a sunstroke, but trucked on like a brave little soldier, explored the beach a bit and took some requisite photos (wtf) and we went to Lang Sari Spa Resort for an early dinner. The place is REALLY beautiful, but it’s something like USD540 per person for a 2D1N stay. -_- We camwhored some more around the hotel. As for our early dinner… kinda disappointing. As L said, even our Redang Lang food was better. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing, and maybe we were still feeling queasy from the boat ride.

That’s basically the gist of “island life” for us during the 2 night stay there… but you know what was the most fun part of the trip for me?!?! It happened on our way back to the airport. You see, another reason why we took Fireflyz was because it had the most sensible flight times for us. Air Asia only had flights out of KT early in the morning (before the boat can reach Merang jetty, the airplane also leave already) or super late at night (have to be stranded at the airport for almost 10 hours). Redang Lang put us on the boat back to mainland at 8:30am and we reached the jetty by 10+am even though our flight was only at 4pm. On the bus transfer to the airport, there was this group of “UMW uncles” who were also with us from day 1. Somehow, the coerced the bus driver to take us to Chinatown KT instead and then pick us up at 2pm to go back to the airport. I donno whattttt the uncle said to the Redang Lang bus transfer driver, but he agreed. And we didn’t even pay him any extra $$. -___- I think the driver must be cursing us la…

Anyway, Chinatown KT was quite fun la! We walked around the place, had some Terengganu food (nasi kerabu, wakakkaa), bought keropok, checked out the weird stuff they sell there… and I even found an awesome haberdashery where I could buy stuff to jazz up my annual dinner costume which would’ve caused a bomb back in KL, but was only RM9 there! L said my eyes so sharp to find “these kinda things”…. I see that he is not impressed! Hehehe. Oh yeah, thanks to L, I finally set up an appointment to see a dentist… my first time in 12 years. People would be shocked to know that, seeing as how awesome my teeth are. I’m just truly blessed. ;p

Upon reaching Subang, the next thing I had to do was go for my dad’s birthday dinner. :) So it was a really hectic day. Thank goodness that I took Monday off as well, though I’m paying for it on Tuesday. I didn’t even get to do much on Monday, just random relaxing stuff and catching up on house chores.

BTW, the percentage of hot girls I saw on holiday in Lang Tengah far outweighs the number of hot guys on holiday. I also don’t get how come some girls feel the need to wear shirts and shorts to go snorkeling, but with their swimsuit underneath. I think most other people are far too worried about their own body to go and worry about yours, so just go romping around in your bikini lar. I know I did. :P
